So tonight I went to my first life drawing session(at the Palette and Chisel Open Studios!) since graduating from MICA. It was...painful in a lot of ways but amazingly affirming in a lot of others. I was pretty rusty, so bear with me here, it will hopefully become a weekly event.

I forgot how therapeutic sitting and drawing a model is. Here are some samples from the class. I made BRILLIANT choices and used really light pencils on some of them and they scanned horribly, but what can you do.

I am alive in the new year, swear to god. I hope everyone has been well! Things have been crazy busy in Chicago, but the good news is I have a few projects in the works and hopefully a whole crazy amount of new work is going to be coming!

When I, or someone I know, get really overwhelmed at work(or I do something completely dickish), I like to try and cheer them with ridiculousness. Here are a couple things I've made various friends that litter our office space. My goal is to thoroughly permeate the entire room with my...unique...sense of humor/boobs.

I'll post some more of these when I get a chance to rob people's desks and scan them.

I got a couch and a rug this weekend, so now I have rediscovered my love of sitting on the floor in front of the tv doing work. Here was a quick little painting I made for a friend of mine that just recently moved to the city(THE BEST CITY, I SHOULD ADD). I'm thinking of doing a Chicago Sports Series now.

You can't live in this city without growing some pride, especially not with a Father that kept us all well engrossed in the Bulls during their Jordan heydays.

So this is a little embarrassing, but I'm trying to get over myself and post it anyway. I haven't done a self portrait (that i'll admit to) in a while. I did this one a few months ago and just now got around to scanning it. The second piece is the piece I created for Michael Owen's Innovate Love Project, which I was very proud and excited to be a part of. I delayed scanning this one for a while because I couldn't get the colors to turn out right on the computer. I eventually just gave up, I'll upload a picture of the framed piece eventually.

Lets not talk about it again, ok.

I remember the first time I saw the music video for Coldplay's The Scientist in high school. At the time, it made me cry hysterically and I didn't really understand why. I feel like now, probably 7 or 8 years later, I have a slightly better comprehension as to how it easily snipped my heart strings. I think it was in that time during your teenage years where you really start to realize your choices are going to alter your life from that point on...and it bloody well terrified me.

Enough of that, though! This is a job I finished up a month or so ago, but just never got around to posting for some odd reason. I did 15 illustrations for an online OPTI Magazine, all about a girl who had to complete 14 tasks in time for her holiday fiesta. Here are a few of my favorite tasks:

So I've been toying with the idea of doing a daily sketch for a while now. While I can almost guarantee its not going to be daily, I can at least promise it'll be somewhat regular. It will probably eventually segway into something else, just because I don't feel like I can make poor wardrobe choices forever (right, guys?....right?), but I've got fodder enough for more than a few of these.

As for the topic, I make bad choices in dressing myself almost every single day. Be it that I was born and raised in Florida and now live in Chicago, that I can't afford a proper wardrobe, or that I'm simply slow, numerous people have commented on my seeming lack of common sense in something I should've learned how to do when I was 5.

This becomes ESPECIALLY apparent in the winter.

I was chosen as the Spot Artist Extraordinaire for an upcoming issue of the children's magazine Cicada. I absolutely love doing work for them because its generally really fun and silly work that gets me out of the groove of constantly drawing half naked ladies.

As spot artist, your job is to choose a theme and do 5 sketches to be used as spots throughout that issue of the magazine.

Busy, busy, busy. Thats what I have been as of lately. So without further ado, here is some of that busy.

First and foremost is a cover I did for the NOV/DEC issue of the Children's Magazine, Muse. I love how it turned out and it was my first time using my rapidographs on a final. I am in love with them now and have no idea why I didn't buy a set sooner. It gave me the line quality I've only ever dreamed of with microns.
Next was a third Burlesque poster I did for my favorite local Chicago troupe. I went with fall colors, as Chicago is starting to get prettty chilly. The first image is just a little fun I had with it without the type. I think I actually prefer the type version.

I really enjoy laying out and hand lettering my own fonts.

And last but not least is two of three pieces I did for another client about being able to escape daily life and relax. I didn't end up really happy with these, but I don't think I could've done the above pieces if I hadn't struggled through these.

I went ahead and splurged on a set of Koh I Noor Rapidograph pens today. I'm worried they'll make my work more stiff, but mostly I'm just excited for intense stainless steel pen action.

Regardless, here is a set of freelance I finished up over the weekend. The client wanted something Fashiony but that showcased the Lingerie in a marketable way.
As you all know I love few things more than drawing curvy ladies, but for some reason this last week was just a pox on my artistic existence. I had a string of the worst drawing days in YEARS. I finally managed to overcome the hump and finish these up. I'm excited to see what becomes of them with the client.

I have been getting into post-it art lately, it is a dangerous pasttime when you're surrounded by them at work. This is a little lady doodle I sketched the other day and I thought she was quirky and cute enough to get some photoshop lovin'. I think the 70s inspired her.

Lucidity Book

Sorry I haven't been updating! Its been crazy busy here in Chitown, and I've been running around nonstop. I won't be able to update with new work this week because...I'M MOVING!

Hoorah! Just closer to the city, basically to my dream neighborhood. I am very, very excited. I'll be firmly planted next week, but until then I am without access to art supplies or a scanner, blergh!

But I wanted to let everyone know about Lucidity, a book published by artist Tom Wild. Tom contacted me a few months ago asking if I'd like to submit some work for a project he was working on. It was a collection of art from all over the world that delves into the subconscious and dreams. I didn't have enough time to create a completely new piece, but when he first told me about the project I knew my Fairytale thesis work would be perfect as they were all reflections of the deep crevices in my weird brain. Today he sent out a digital copy for all his artists to peruse, and it looks amazing! I am so proud and happy to be a part of this project.

So here are two kind of grungy pieces. One was me fooling around and the other will be the June cover for HPN magazine.

I keep listening to Your Only Doll (Dora) by Laura Marling and I guess it inspired this first one. I wish I could be so free in my finals. ONE DAY.

This second one is about sanitary conditions in hospitals and infection control. There is so much room for the title and article copy, but it was pretty fun to make all those little virus patterns. Maybe I'll post them one day.

I took this down about a week ago for some personal reasons, but after some tweaks and image adjustments I decided it was high-time to repost it.
The show it was for went off without a hitch, however, and I'm very excited to be doing another poster for an upcoming production.

I've attached a version with the text, of which I was only responsible for the hand drawn title at the top, but the billing and everything else was laid in by Ms. Bea of Girlie-Q Productions.
I almost like the composition more with the girl to the side and a taller comp.

I have some new work to post at the end of this week which I'm excited about. Keep an eye peeled, guys!

It has been an exceedingly busy week. I feel flustered and tired. Whew.
This is a new piece/pieces (they'll be printed together in the article) that I finished up for the upcoming issue of Muse Magazine.

The article had to deal with Memory and techniques people use to remember things, like an entire deck of cards in order. It was a fun and unusual assignment and I enjoyed doing it a lot.

In a broader artistic related note, music is incredibly important to my artistic process, and will often contribute to the quality and mood of my work. I have been listening to a lot of British music recently and, consequently, I have fallen in love. Ms. Laura Marling is only 18, but I find her songs beautifully written and clever. Her voice is also to die for and makes me very jealous that I have absolutely no musical talent. Give her a listen:

In an effort to post more often, I'm seriously going to throw up every halfway interesting thing I think I do. I played a bit more in my sketchbook this evening, and this is what happened. I think with a little more planning, I could get into this type of thing. This was only an hour or two of messing around, but I think a bit of focus could yield some interesting things.

I also need to buy an Exacto knife, for reals.

Edit: Hey guys, I just found out that way back in November I was given a little feature on a page called "DesignHer" I thought it was pretty cool as its a page dedicated to women artists in a variety of fields! They're always looking for new artists to feature, so my fellows ladies should get in on that! Neeeeat! Thanks, guys!

So I keep lying and promising to post more, but pretty much taking month long breaks in between. The truth is, I've been so busy with work and having a ridiculous crush on Robert Pattinson and feeling dirty for it. Tee hee. I have also been listening to an inordinate amount of Britney Spears, Beyonce, and, my all time love, Christina Aguilera. That is very time consuming, duh. But I seriously think the amount of pop music in my life is about to have a drastic effect on my artwork.

I haven't really been doing any finished pieces. I'd been trying to hold out till I finished something I deemed "complete" and "good", but I finally realized it was just time to post some good ol' sketches.
So here we go, a little smattering of my favorite subject matter, naked ladies.

I did this one day at work when I felt incredibly ill and foresaw myself in the very near future perched over a toilet seat like this. It is endearingly titled "Sickface sketchface".

I drew that cat/dog girl one day, also at work, on my lunch break. And was mystified by it. I don't know why. I had just finished reading "The Book of Lost Things" by John Connolly and I think his description of the wolfmen in that book really terrified me. I like that girl with the bob too because she looks a little bit drugged and her face makes me laugh.

I love sketching with watercolor, its one of my favorite things. I liked how this one turned out. She looks a bit evil and scandalous.

My favorite sketch I'm posting. I finished this just yesterday and it prompted me to actually make a blog post. I've been looking at a lot of decadent fashion photography for a project I'm thinking about starting. More on that if I actually get off my bum to do it.

Hurrah, I updated. I wanted to say a big congratulations to Sam Bosma and Nancy Muller, two of my favorite people ever, that were featured on Drawn! I'm proud of you guys! <3

An update 2 months overdue.

I know, I've been miserable with keeping this up to date. I wanted to post some of the jobs I had done a couple of months back for Carus Publishing. They are all nice and published now.

I'll try to get some more personal work up later this week, but I was pretty pleased with how the drawings for these two stories came out. I also did the layout for both of the stories, but I don't have a final pdf version to post just yet. I'll try and get one soon!

This first set of images was for a story entitled "The Locked Door" which ran in Muse. The story was incredibly interesting and about the study of a person's unconscious mind and how it really makes a good portion of the decisions that we need to make to get us through our day. It was targeted for 10-13 year old kids, but I found myself pretty enthralled by it.

*note: I lost my colored version of this piece, its lurking somewhere in unorganized files. Here is a quick grayscale mockup.

He was part of "The Lull" series also, but its probably my favorite thing I've drawn in a while so he gets his own special highlight. I plan on going back into him and doing a nice color job when I get the opportunity.

This next set of images were for a story entitled "The Lull" which ran in the November edition of Cicada. I was quite proud of my take on not only the story, but the layout as well. I'll try and post the PDF soon.

Had an urge to do some more involved sketchbook pages. This first one is a bit silly, but my goal was to fill the page and not think too much about what I was necessarily drawing. Figures are supppper wonky. Enjoyed my office-supply collage.

Lost At E Minor

I've been without the internet for a week or so, and I just got it back to discover I had a mention on the website Lost At E Minor.

I know they've also done spots on Kali, and I just wanted to give a big thank you to Ilana Kohn for the mention! It made my day!
I am now moved to Chicago from Baltimore and I must say I love it.
Artistically I've been working on a few Freelance jobs and will start an internship with a local publishing company on Monday. Alls quite great!

Here is a little preview of one of the jobs I did, I don't think I can show the whole story just yet, but it was a ton of fun!

This was my final piece for thesis. I think it has a success on a different level than its predecessors. I'm very happy with how much I was able to simplify the composition, but I think a little extra detail and some more time with the colors would've really made it shine. I was just toooooo tired.
I have a series of four etchings I also did at the very end of the semester to compliment my work in the final show. I think they are definitely the most technically advanced etchings I've done so far and I was pretty happy. I'll post some pictures once I scan them.

Fashion Final.

For the past few weeks in my Fashion Illustration class, I have had the pleasure of having Frank Stockton as my teacher. He has taught me to be more confident in my work in three weeks, than I've ever been able to do in 4 years at MICA. His artwork is also beyond amazing, and I hope to one day be able to use line as smartly as he does. Our final assignment was to design a piece based around a Fortune from a Fortune cookie. My Fortune was:

"Let the Predictability and Reliability of life sustain you."

Pretty ominous, I thought. As I was pretty drawn out, I decided to revert to my Collage style for this piece, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

So not drawing or doing anything for a month was a bad idea. Very rough week trying to get back into things.
These two are both just me messing around. I think they're both pretty ugly, but the first is a technique I may play more with.
The color job on the second linework ruins it, I think. Its based on a fairytale I'm currently obsessed with, though, so I'll probably revisit the image.

Update: A stamp project for Illustration concepts. Not too happy with the final product, but I love the intaglio prints. I just need to get better at scanning them and messing with their levels.

I had a few too many days leave me dissatisfied and, frankly, pissed about what I had intended and ultimately not accomplished with my time. Hopefully this blog will help keep me on some sort of artistic ball and force me to really keep on top of things.
Artists like showing off what they've created and especially love feedback and constuctive bitchslaps about what they should and should not continue doing.

I'll begin with some of the things I've worked on very recently, not my best (the awesome way to drag in people is showing them awful examples of your work, trust me) but pretty fun. There shall be more, OH YES.

my idea was originally to commemorate a delicious folk tale and song through my art work. I felt compelled, infact, Linoleum was an awful choice of medium, though, and thus this is NOT a representation of the Legend of Kitty Jay or the achingly beautiful song by Wishbone Ash.
